Just
for the sake of a break from all those Haiti single news. A story
Peter Nobel, a director of Bluefest (Australia) told:
"We always knew Shane had his ‘foibles’,” says Noble.
“So the plan was to bring him in three days before the first date
in Sydney at the Gaelic Club.
“The first day he rolls up to Qantas in London, they
wouldn’t let him on the plane ... The Pogues (The Popes in fact, it was April 2003,
their Australian tour - me.) called and said we tried, we
weren’t drunk, they just wouldn’t let us on. The second day
he rolls up to Qantas and they wouldn’t let him on because of how
he looked – Irish people always drink but it doesn’t mean
they are drunk. Then they called and said if we change the ticket to
British Airways it would be okay. They’re used to us, they
said!”
There was no sign of MacGowan on the morning he was due to play
Bluesfest, so Noble sat down with his manager, telling him if he
didn’t show up, he wouldn’t get paid.
But MacGowan somehow found his way to the Bluesfest site:
“MacGowan walked on stage, sat down in his chair and said,
‘I’m here – good evening New Zealand’.”

A
brief report on Haiti charity single:
All
goes very well and according to the plan. Some rehearsals on Thursday
afternoon. Friday (29.01.10) was the big day when all recording took
place at Battersea studio, South London.
Everything’s supervised by one of the world’s best
producers. Now it’s in the caring hands of PR people. With
all big names involved (Glen Mattlock, Nick Cave, Bobbie Gillespie,
Mick Jones to name a few) the single is going to be one of the coolest
things
ever. It’s scheduled for release at the end of February and has
been so timed to ensure that the plight of Haiti is kept high on the
public agenda. Money raised will go the Concern Worldwide (Dublin-based
charity).

Shane tune

BOOZY
rocker Shane MacGowan is teaming up with pals including
Johnny
Depp to
record his own Haiti
single.
The Pogues ace, 52, has also
signed
Depp's partner Vanessa Paradis,
Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie and crooner
Nick
Cave for the
cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' 1956 hit "I Put A Spell On You".
MacGowan flew from his Irish farm to
begin recording in London yesterday.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW Just six months ago, on 29th July
2009,
Shane performed this song
together with Candice Gordon, a
young but ambitious Dublin based singer and guitarist
at Voodoo Ball - Hope for Haiti, a fundraiser organized
by Candice as a benefit for Haven, a new
international
charity, which is building homes and hopes in the poorest country of
the western world. The gig also featured Jerry Fish, The
Mighty
Stef, Spellbound and Mundy... Candice was among 250 Irish volunteers
who later went to Haiti to take part in a week long house building.
What has happened to those houses now?
So I'd dare to suppose the song choice wasn't accidental.

recording. Look forward to pics!

Victoria's
contribution for the last issue of The Dubliner magazine.
She speaks on touring with Shane and dilemmas of rock 'n 'roll behavior:
What Would Madonna Do

...
Shane fits more comfortably into the Keith Richards/Moon or indeed
Ozzy/Pete Doherty type of performer than the Madonna type, and at times
that can be stressful for those close to him. While I agree with this
man who insists that he prefers rock legends who do rock
‘n’ roll things like setting fire to themselves and
throwing televisions, I do find that there is a fine line between being
just rock ‘n’ roll enough to make an impression and
being so rock ‘n’ roll that you end up in a sticky
mess...

PETE DOHERTY
& THE POLEAXED* POGUE
The
Academy, Dublin, 20 Jan, 2010
Ryan

Irish
Connection UK

Jan 2010
On
Wednesday night however, it was his adoring fans who were the one's
left 'breathless' as Pete (sorry, Peter) Doherty tore the place to
shreds with some rip-roaring tunes. Indeed, I say tearing to shreds in
the musical sense of course. However, once it came to light that
former
Pogues front-man - or is that mad-man? - Shane MacGowan (see here) had
entered the building there was the distinct possiblility that the
Academy would literally crumble in his wake.
One unashamed bottle of vodka in hand, Magowan did indeed do what we
had all feared as staff members - he hooked up with Doherty back-stage
after the gig. Surely all we were missing would be an impromptu
appearance from Amy Winehouse. But alas, Pete would have to make-do
with Shane and vice-versa. It would put you in mind of the young
prodigy taking tips off his uglier older and waster wiser master. Pete,
you are in the best of hands.
So, with groupies in-tact both musicians departed at midnight
respectibly - just 90 minutes after the gig itself. However, I would
seriously doubt Pete and Shane's night ended there. After all, these
guys had a reputation to uphold! My thoughts go out to the poor bastard
who had to clean the dressing room afterwards.

Shane

MacGowan
stays awake for a week

Shane
MacGowan has revealed he stays awake for a week at a time.
In an interview with the new edition of Mojo magazine, the singer said:
"I generally stay awake for about a week - I get catnaps, and then when
I'm really exhausted I crash out for a good long while and carry on,
you know what I mean?"
He made his revelation after being asked whether he found his
songwriting came more easily at certain times, such as before bed.
"Maybe if I went to bed," he said.
The Mojo interview took place during an all-night drinking session at
his favourite pub in Nenagh, Tipperary in Ireland which ended at 7am.
MacGowan also tells the interviewer, author Will Hodgkinson, he has
been told to buy a lottery ticket by a fairy.
Despite the beating he has given his body, MacGowan said he was aiming
for a long life.
"What I'm interested in doing is having a great time, and the audience
having a great time, and living as long as I possibly can."

GUINNESS BALDNESS CURE

Hard-drinking
THE POGUES star SHANE MACGOWAN has turned to alcohol to make sure he
always has a full head of hair - he regularly washes it in Guinness.
The Irish singer insists men losing their hair would be wise to follow
the Irish custom of running Guinness through their follicles. He says,
"They sell all those lotions to cure you of baldness... They don't
work. There is only one way to cure baldness - you pour Guinness over
your head, collect it in a bucket, and drink it in the morning. "It's
proven to work." And MACGowan refuses to wash his hair when he's not at
home in Ireland: "I don't wash it - only in Tipperary water."
The full text of the inspiring interview will be linked later..

Sharon
Shannon and Co leave crowds wanting more
By

Music
fans travelled in their droves in very inclement weather
conditions over the festive season to see what has been termed as one
of the best Kilkenny gigs of the year. Sharon Shannon along with
guests, Imelda May, Shane McGowan and Mundy rocked the Hub venue at
Cillin Hill on Wednesday December 30, last and the event did not
disappoint. <...>Shane MacGowan also made his second
appearance and for two years running turned up to serenade fans in
Kilkenny with his soulful lyrics. A little under the weather as usual,
he belted out old favourites such as The Irish Rover which really got
the crowd going. He also sang Fiesta, Sally MAclannan and Rainy Night.
However, the ‘piece de resistence’ had to be the
Fairytale of New York duet which he sang with Imelda May. It has to be
said that never has the song sounded so right since the death of his
former duet partner Kirsty McColl. Imelda was the perfect blend with
Shane’s husky tones.

Irish
Blood English Heart
Second Generation Irish Musicians in England
By Sean Campbell
Hardback: 978-1859184615
Publisher: Cork University Press
June
2010 , 200 pp., 6 1/4" x 9
1/4"
The book explores the creative work of second-generation Irish
musicians, drawing on original interviews that the author has conducted
with Shane MacGowan, Cait O'Riordan, Kevin Rowland and Johnny Marr. A
vast amount of literature has been published on these musicians, but
there has been little consideration of their work from a specifically
second-generation Irish perspective. The book develops innovative
analyses of these musicians, presenting their work as a set of
interventions and negotiations within the Anglo-Irish interface.
Audio releases:
Shane MacGowan is on the second
volume of Hal Willner’s
“Rogue’s Gallery”,
another collection of
bawdy seashanties, beautiful ballads and frisky pirates songs, which is
going to be released (finally) in 2010.
It has been being on cards
since 2006 when the first volume came out. There was a surplus from the
first batch and more have been added. Among the contributors this time
are Tom Waits, Keith Richard and Johnny Depp.
Shane MacGowan is featured on the seventh album of Alabama 3. "Revolver
Soul" is due to be out in
March 2010. Among other guest stars
contributing to the album are Huey Morgan of the Fun Lovin’
Criminals, Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell, Orbital. And the
whole
creation must be very digital and urban.
